Julie Morey was a good
Christian girl who'd spent 10 years married to a man she deeply loved. When
alcoholism destroyed her marriage she decided to spend seven months in exotic South
East Asia doing everything she shouldn't.

With only her backpack
and a broken heart, Julie found herself dancing all night at Thailand's famous Full
Moon Party, crashing her scooter, eating happy pizza, kissing gorgeous men with
accents, hitchhiking, breaking into national monuments, and couchsurfing all
over India, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

A 10 day silent meditation
retreat finally connected Julie with the deep inner reserves that allowed her
to grieve and break with her past. She realized that even if her life is a
train wreck all she has to do is face in the right direction and keep walking.

Brave, brutally honest,
sexy, and laugh-out-loud funny, Travel,
Sex, and Train Wrecks
is the story of one young woman's first steps towards
living life on her own terms.

Travel Sex Train Wrecks eBook Julie Morey

I was in need of another travel book, and quickly picked this one up based on the strong reviews. Big mistake, sort of. What I like is the author was not afraid to open herself up to the reader, as she made bold forays into personal topics such as her failed marriage, her changing conservative values, her evolving sexuality, and challenging her relationship with God. She wasn't traveling just for the sake of traveling, but to escape from her past and to help re-discover herself, so it was like a journey on two levels. The book covered the aforementioned topics well, and did so against the backdrop of exciting locations throughout Asia. This was just honest and fresh writing. I appreciate that the author took the time to share her very personal story and was willing to take the risk of being judged by readers who might have opinions about a woman making strong comments about religion and sexuality.

That said, the author's target audience is clearly women, particularly women who read books like "50 Shades of Grey" and probably fantasize about traveling and meeting strange men in foreign lands. As a guy, it was definitely uncomfortable reading at times, but I paid $4 and dammit I was determined to get my money's worth. I felt like an uncle being invited to play tea party with his 5-year-old niece, and he has to play along so to not disappoint her: "What? Yea sure, I guess I can sit down in this little pink chair and hold a cup of tea, but I gotta go in a few minutes okay? Are we having fun yet? Yea? Do I really have to wear this bonnet? Okay, I really gotta go now." The book could use a good editor, as the story kind of jumps all over the place at times, with flashbacks or things happening out of sequence, but it wasn't difficult for me to figure out what was going on.

All in all, I enjoyed this book and particularly seeing the Southeast Asia backpackers circuit through a woman's eyes, but I probably will only recommend it anonymously if I could. I don't want my friends to find out.

Travel Sex Train Wrecks eBook Julie Morey Reviews

I met Julie in a restaurant in Campbell, CA -- A mutual friend of ours had invited me out to meet her. She's amazingly bright and fun to chat with, very unassuming. It wasn't until the end of dinner that she mentioned she'd written a book. Such an amazing person! While I enjoyed her entire story, her ten days of silence with the monks was particularly meaningful for me. I've traveled many times myself, and I absolutely recommend this to anyone in search of themselves and new adventures. Next stop, Thailand!
I read this story a couple times. It is sad and depressing story meant to be funny. However, the author/ traveler is not a nice person or one that is traveling for the love of learning. She sleeps around with strangers, as long as their white males. She doesn't like the natives that much or the problems of living among the hulking masses who don't have toilette paper. She mediates, but has a drinking problem like her ex-husband.

If you want to read a more interesting book about being slutty, read Errol Flynns, My Wicked, Wicked Ways. Even Errol comes off less shallow than this girl, as he probes his bad behavior and screw-ups in life with more insight.
Travel, Sex & Train Wrecks tells the true story of a young woman's journey of moving on and finding herself after a difficult divorce. The journey is both literal and figurative, as it occurs in the context of the author's solo travels through Southeast Asia. We follow along on Morey's wild ride as she explores new cultures and opens herself up to new experiences. I loved reading about her crazy experiences, but what struck me most was Morey's frankness in sharing those experiences. As a non-fiction writer, I can appreciate how difficult it can be to put yourself out there for all the world to see. But it is this honesty and transparency that gives the book such strength and richness.

The book is a fun (even hilarious at times) read that leaves you thinking about life and wanting to experience more. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys travel narratives or to anyone seeking inspiration during a difficult time.
Julie has lots of fun on her travels, but she also learns a lot about herself. She cuts loose and sews a lot of wild oats after her break up with her husband. And she doesn't hold back in writing to the public about all her escapades. This honesty is admirable - and as a travel writer myself, I can truthfully say that she has inspired me to be more forthcoming in my writing.

In addition, I admire her very much for doing the silent meditation retreat - something that I've thought lots about but think I wouldn't be able to do. It is during this retreat that she really shows that she is finally coming to terms with her break up.

A fun read where you get some rollicking good sex, but also some very important self-discovery.

Highly recommended.

I will admit that before writing this I went and "reviewed the reviews" and was a bit taken aback at the lower rating comments. Seriously? Who would ever guess that a book entitled "Travel, Sex and Train Wrecks" would not be a detailed travelouge to be used by someone interested in experiencing the world?!?!? So my first comment is to disregard any rating lower than 4.5 stars (Since there is no .5 just disregard anything lower than a 5)!! This book is HYSTERICAL!! It shows how Julie took a rotten situation and embarked on an adventure that most of us will only experience through her words. Yes, having an open mind and a wicked sense of humor is the only way you will throughoughly enjoy this story. If you're stoic, straight-laced, don't think anyone over 25 should have fun, then this probably isn't the book for you. I suggest AAA for detailed maps for you. All I can say is if you want an awesome adventure without having to pee outside, READ IT!!
